Highly Sensitive Persons

Sometimes we feel strange, we seem to not belong, but why do we think we feel and suffer more than others?

We speak of HSP or Highly Sensitive people when a person has a more developed nervous system than the general population of people, which impacts the degree of sensory information they receive and how their brain processes it. These types of people usually receive much more information than someone with a medium sensitivity, which directly affects the way they understand, see and relate to the world.

HSP in people who suffer from it, gives rise to the development of a personality trait scientifically called «sensory processing sensitivity SPS», which develops across life and is characterized by four Pillars:

Great emotionality and capacity of empathy for others, which leads to intense reactions to everyday situations or situations of great emotional impact.
Mental saturation and over sensory stimulation, which happens due to the large amount of information that is absorbed in a short time.
Great depth in information processing by generating a deep/exhaustive analysis of the perceived stimuli, which results in a more intense response.
Sensitivity to the subtleties of the environment (smells, tastes, surfaces, everyday life situations, among other things).

Some symptoms of highly sensitive people are:

  • High empathy.
  • Sensitivity to physical, psychological and emotional pain.
  • Great need to belong and be liked.
  • Emotional attachment and great facility to fall in love.
  • Difficulty maintaining personal boundaries and saying no.
  • Constant emotional suffering.
  • Perfectionism.
  • Inability to handle stressful situations.
  • Problems keeping jobs and healthy relationships.
  • Emotional instability.
  • Social anxiety.
  • Low pain threshold.
  • Great affectation before bright lights, noise in general, strong smells, generating headaches or migraines or anxiety attacks among others.
Intense pain due to the suffering of others.

Understanding that we are all different and that there are people with «High Sensitivity» helps us understand on many occasions the reason for the behavior of others, but mostly helps us understand ourselves much better, and get to the reason why we feel the way we do. Sometimes we do not fit in with the society prototypes and we have problems to control our emotions. Through learning about HSP you can discover who you are and how you function and improve your mental health.

Let’s work together on how to achieve emotional intelligence and well-being, control over your high sensitivity and the negative effects that SPS symptoms have on you. Remember that you are not alone in your healing process, and count on me to help you be the best version of you.
