Emotional Trauma – What is it and how it affects me ?

When we have an event in our lives, that causes a huge emotional impact in our mind and body generating huge stress, discomfort and pain, we speak about trauma.

Trauma is a wound, that can be physical or psychological, but when we speak about emotional wounds we talk about Emotional Trauma.

An emotional trauma refers to an emotional shock that generates intense damage in our unconscious mind and our brain , unbalancing the way we respond to different events in our life. We have physiological tissues that can withstand a certain amount of impact without deteriorating beyond their ability to recover on their own, above a certain threshold, the impact is too strong, and negatively and lastingly modifies the physiological tissues or the mental structure of the individual.

An emotional trauma is determine by the subjective experience of each person, their skills to manage stressful situations and intense fears, brain structure and the level of impact of the event. For some people situations that for others are normal or not so critical can generate traumas, as for others the emotional shock should be huge in order to generate any impact.

There are different types of traumas:

– Acute trauma: results from a single stressful or dangerous event.

-Chronic trauma: Results from repeated and prolonged exposure to highly stressful events. Examples include cases of child abuse, bullying, or domestic violence.

-Complex trauma: results from exposure to multiple traumatic events.

Regardless of the size or intensity of the trauma, this will generate effects on the person that experienced it and without proper psychotherapy the person can develop deep psychological distress characterized by anxiety, depression, PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder), social distancing, dissociative and sexual disorders, feelings of emptiness and loneliness, toxic attachments, phobias, substance abuse among others.

There are some basic symptoms that you can experience if you had been affected by a traumatic situation and you are feeling emotional distress:

  • Not being able to sleep and having nightmares at night.
  • Experiencing flashbacks of the situation
  • Increased irritability. More sensitivity to any circumstance and fundamentally to all those similar to the situation that has left a lasting trauma
  • Anxiety
  • Nervousness at all hours (Something that didn’t happen to you before but now you seem nervous about almost anything).
  •  Fear of any situation, even in the most normal day-to-day
  • Desire to distance from your love ones and social activities.

Trauma is one of the main reasons we feel as we feel, sometimes we feel hopeless as we don’t understand from where all the emotions that we are feeling are coming, but something you need to know is that you are not alone and you can heal and live the life you always wanted after a traumatic event.
